Project management is taking the world by storm, some of societies toughest problems or innovative ideas are being solved through collaboration.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) recently released its 2021 most influential list of projects that are currently underway. The following are MyDev’s favourites:
The Tokyo Toilet
Tokyo toilet is a unique new modern design of public restroom facilities. According to Tokyotoilet.jp toilets are already “a symbol of Japan’s world-renowned hospitality culture.” The redesign of 17 public facilities is a task that demands collaboration across 16 invited designers as well as mayors and government officials from across Tokyo, no easy task. The project manager must be attentive and respectful to all the designers while maintaining control to ensure the design & construction of the remaining locations are completed by 2022.
Operation Hijab Design
With Muslim’s migrating, more police departments are finding themselves with a growing number of women officers of faith. Since police officers serve the community, they must also resemble the community and be respected for who they are. This starts with respecting Muslim officer uniforms including a hijab. In New Zealand, the task was taken up “the Nga Pae Mahutonga Wellington School of Design at Massey University to develop a fit-for-purpose hijab.” After working hard for 16 months, the design school created a hijab that was both comfortable during long shifts provided a clear field of vision and did not interfere with driving or using a firearm.
Overture
The project is about designing supersonic aircraft that run on 100% sustainable fuel. Talk about an ambitious goals! The first test flight is set by year-end, with production beginning in 2023. Unfortunately, supersonic flight isn’t cheap, seats will begin at $5,000. While the US airlines shied away from the last supersonic aircraft, the Concord, this time US-based United Airlines has signed a deal for 15 of Boom Supersonic’s aircraft, with an option to purchase 35 more if desired. Just imagine how much collaboration among so many engineers occurred to build such an aircraft, and for its propulsion systems to be incongruent with international green standards.
Keep in mind, all three of these projects have one thing in common, they have a community of disciplined individuals working together. The COO of the PMI said it best “Our 2021 list of Most Influential Projects proves how creativity, collaboration, discipline, and determination can turn the boldest of ideas into a reality and change the world that we live in — even during the most challenging times.” The people assigned to these projects are ambitious and dare to find new ways to innovate. The global pandemic is not slowing these organizations down, those that are determined always find a way to succeed and accomplish what few can achieve.
